Privacy Policy
Last updated: January 14, 2026
This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, how we handle it, and your rights. We never sell your data - not for money, not for anything.
Key Points
- We're a subscription business - our revenue comes from you, not from selling your data or showing ads
- We collect only what's necessary to provide budgeting services
- All sensitive financial data is encrypted at rest
- You control your data and can delete it anytime
- We use standard third-party services (Plaid, Stripe, etc.) to operate Tend
What we collect and why
Identity and access
When you sign up for Tend, we ask for your name and email address. This lets you personalize your account and allows us to send you essential product updates. We may occasionally send optional surveys to understand how you use Tend and improve it.
Billing information
If you subscribe to Tend, payment information goes directly to Stripe, our payment processor. We never see or store your credit card details. Stripe collects your payment card information to process your subscription. We only store your subscription ID and customer ID from Stripe.
For information on Stripe's data handling, see Stripe's Privacy Policy.
Financial data
Tend stores the financial transactions and account information you provide, either by:
- Connecting your bank accounts through Plaid (our banking data provider)
- Manually entering transactions
We store:
- Transaction dates, amounts, and descriptions
- Account names and balances
- Bank names
- Any classifications or notes you add to transactions
- Your budget categories
- Scheduled items on your calendar
All bank credentials are stored securely by Plaid - we only have read-only access to your transaction feed and balances. Plaid is a secure, industry-standard banking data provider. For information on how Plaid handles your data, see Plaid's Privacy Policy.
All sensitive financial data is encrypted at rest. This data can only be accessed by the running production application.
Multi-user account sharing
If you add other users to your budget (for example, a spouse or partner), all users with access to that budget can:
- View all financial data in the budget
- Add, edit, or delete transactions
- See all account balances and transaction history
By adding another user to your budget, you authorize us to share all of your financial data with that user. All users in a shared budget have equal access to all data.
Account access logs
We log your IP address when you access your account for security and fraud prevention purposes. These logs are kept as long as your account is active.
Website analytics
We use Plausible Analytics to understand how people use our website. Plausible is privacy-focused and:
- Doesn't use cookies
- Doesn't track you across websites
- Only collects basic, anonymous information (pages visited, referral sources)
- Doesn't collect personal information
Email communications
We use Postmark to send transactional emails (password resets, receipts, account notifications). When you email us with questions, we keep that correspondence so we have context for future conversations.
Error monitoring
We use Appsignal to track application errors and performance issues. This helps us fix bugs and improve Tend's reliability. Appsignal may receive technical information like error messages and stack traces, but does not receive your financial data.
Cookies and tracking
Tend uses minimal cookies for essential functions:
- Essential cookies: Required for login and account access
We do not use:
- Advertising cookies
- Retargeting cookies
- Cross-site tracking
- Third-party advertising networks
AI and automated processing
Current use
We currently categorize transactions using rule-based logic running on our servers. This helps automatically assign transactions to budget categories based on merchant names and patterns.
Future AI features
We plan to use AI services (such as large language models) to improve transaction categorization and provide spending insights. When we implement AI features:
- We will update this policy
- AI processing will only be used to help you manage your budget
- We will not use AI to make decisions that significantly affect you without human review
- You will have the right to object to automated processing
We do not currently use automated decision-making that produces legal effects or similarly significant effects concerning you.
When we access or share your information

No human at Tend looks at your financial data except in rare cases where you've given explicit permission - for example, if you report a bug that requires us to examine your account to fix it.

- Your financial transaction data
- Your personal information
